ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Tuesday’s heavy rains left resident’s basements in Oakville with sewage.

Tyler Hillyer lives along Bordeaux Road and says he’s fed up with feces floating in his basement.

“[Its] flowing like a geyser out of my toilet,” said Hillyer. “It consistently happens, it’s four times in a row.”

Hillyer says this month alone, it’s happened three times. The first sewage problem, he says, was back in May.

Daniel Barkey lives next door to Hillyer and experiences the same sewage problems.

“I am sick and tired of poop in my basement,” said Barkey. “Forced to leave my house to stay at my mom’s house for a couple days.”

Hillyer and Barkey says the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) ignores them when they call about nasty flooding.

“I feel as if I talk to them they know what’s going on, but they’re not telling me what’s going on,” said Hillyer.

Wednesday, First Alert 4 reached out to MSD about Hillyer and Barkey’s concerns.

Sean Stone, an MSD spokesperson, says the wastewater system was inundated by stormwater, causing sewage to back up into homes.

Stone says it’s called an overcharged main.

“I mean, it’s a disaster. The smell doesn’t go away. The smell is underneath my floors,” Hillyer said.

Stone says MSD took four wastewater calls in this neighborhood since July 3 or 4. He says two of them were from Tuesday’s storms.

MSD says they’re still going through all of Tuesday’s calls

“I have dogs, I have cats, my laundry room is down there,” said Hillyer. “It’s truly affecting my daily life.”

As MSD responds to these issues, Hillyer and Barkey are watching the forecast, hoping rain doesn’t fall.
