Kirkwood leaders discuss additional traffic calming ideas on Big Bend Road
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Wednesday, Kirkwood City Council discussed additional traffic calming solutions to pump the brakes on speeding drivers.
Kelley Harris drives Big Bend in Kirkwood daily and knows the dangers of the roadway personally.
“I did have a friend who died at the intersection of Geyer and Big Bend,” said Harris. “So speed was a huge issue in that.”
Harris’s friend, Sarah Howell, was killed in a crash by a speeding driver in May. Howell was a beloved assistant principal.
“Just so senseless that somebody is speeding and running a red light, and being so careless with the lives of other people,” said Harris.
Kirkwood City Council agrees. Back in June, the council approved a resolution calling on St. Louis County to reduce the speed limit on Big Bend Road within the Kirkwood city limits to 30 miles per hour.
The speed limit varies along Big Bend between Interstate 44 and Interstate 270, and fluctuates between 20, 35 and 40 miles per hour, depending where you are.
“I do see a lot of speeders in the morning,” said Pamela Adams “People need to slow down a little bit more.”
During Wednesday’s work session, the council discussed more than just dropping the speed limit. They’re also looking at narrowing lanes, adding side and shoulder striping.
“Anything that saves anybody from the pain that we’ve gone through, I mean that’s a good thing,” said Harris.
