‘Sounded like a big explosion;’ Five injured in head-on crash in Ferguson
FERGUSON, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Five people were left injured after a head-on wreck on Chambers Road in Ferguson Tuesday morning.
“Sounded like a big explosion,” said Felicia Fletcher. “I heard this loud crash and I thought ‘Oh my God, don’t tell me somebody has hit my car again!’
Fletcher says she had flashbacks, so she ran to her front door and saw a mangled mess. Over the last couple years, Fletcher says she’s had two parked cars totaled.
“It’s not okay. I lost a total of two cars – totaled out,” Fletcher.
Ferguson police tell First Alert 4 a marron SUV was going westbound on Chambers, lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a white pick-up truck head-on. Police say five adults were taken to the hospital with head injuries and broken bones.
”We’ve seen so many mangled cars and so many crashes that look like a movie scene,” said Nick Kasoff, chair of Ferguson’s Traffic Commission.
Kasoff says reckless driving on Chambers has been an ongoing problem for years. Kasoff tells First Alert 4 they’ve worked with St. Louis County on making the road safer.
”So to come to that agreement with the county and have the County Executive to pull the plug on it, it’s very frustrating,” said Kasoff.
People are getting hurt, people are dying. On Chambers between Elizabeth and West Florissant there were 66 accidents along this stretch in 2023, according to Ferguson police. Thirty were injury crashes and 36 involved property damage, police say.
First Alert 4′s archives show several deadly crashes and crimes on Chambers over the last four years – including one where a woman was killed and three others were hurt in a 5-car crash on Chambers and West Florissant last October.
