St. Louis DJ finds therapy, power in mixing music
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Whether he’s in the studio at Streets 105.1 or creating memories with the music he mixes, nationally-known Chris “DJ Climate” Baker’s name speaks for itself.
“I was always able to adapt to different atmospheres, just like the weather,” said Baker.
He was born and raised in St. Louis and went to college at the University of Central Missouri.
“St. Louis really is a city of hidden gems,” said Baker. “That’s what I believe it is something about the St. Louis atmosphere.”
Baker says he’s a self-taught DJ, and his love for music started in church when he was 3 years old.
“DJing is nothing but an art; you have to be artistic. Music, it’s been my heart, it’s been my escape, it’s been my peace,” said Baker.
Almost 16 years ago, as a college freshman, he said he was trying to make extra cash and would lean on DJs to learn the craft. Over his first summer in college, Baker said he’d spend at least an hour every day practicing.
“Next thing you know, I was DJing all the parties in the school,” said Baker. “You are actually painting a mural in a live audience of people having fun [when you DJ].”
Baker has crisscrossed the country, controlling and creating vibes in each venue he plays.
“That’s another art form. I have the power to be like, I don’t care how much you stand there and don’t move, I can bet a bag or put whatever it was and make you move one good time,” said Baker.
Music is made off of feelings, Baker said, which is something he wants to share with the world.
However, he says there was a time he wanted to give up.
“There was a point in time where I said I might not do this anymore,” said Baker. “That’s when it started transitioning from me DJing for people, where I really started DJing for myself.”
For decades, he said he’s seen the power of DJing and music on others, but now he knows that for himself.
“Therapy. It’s therapeutic. I believe I’m more in tune with myself,” said Baker. I can go places, and I can see what I’m putting on people and what the happiness is, and that gives me, it fills me.
A tune he’ll continue to play for others, knowing music can move you in more ways than one.
